There are fragrances that imitate leather.
Then there are fragrances that honour its history.
Onyx Leather was born from an obsession with the ancient art of smoke, resin, and wood the very elements that transformed raw hide into one of history's most prized materials.
Long before modern tanning, leather was suspended above smouldering birch fires, where the wood slowly surrendered its dark oils into the hide. Over weeks, the smoke became part of the leather itself, creating an aroma that was rich, mysterious, and impossible to forget. That centuries-old ritual became the foundation of this fragrance.
Every material within Onyx Leather was chosen not only for its aroma, but for the extraordinary journey required to bring it to life.
The heart begins with Omani Frankincense Absolute, one of perfumery's rarest treasures. Harvested from the sacred Boswellia sacra trees that cling to the cliffs of southern Oman, each tree is carefully scored by hand, allowing crystalline tears of resin to slowly emerge beneath the desert sun. These tears are left to mature before being collected and transformed into an absolute—a painstaking extraction that captures the resin's deepest character. Gone is the bright citrus of fresh frankincense; what remains is its very soul: dark incense, warm amber, ancient stone, and sacred smoke.
To recreate the aroma of traditional leather, Birch Tar is produced through the slow, oxygen-starved pyrolysis of birch bark. Heat gently coaxes thick, black oils from the bark without allowing it to burn, creating one of perfumery's most powerful natural materials. Smoky, tar-like and hauntingly beautiful, it carries the unmistakable scent of weathered leather infused with wood smoke.
Alongside it rests Cade Oil, distilled from the aged heartwood of the cade juniper. The wood is slowly carbonised before its aromatic vapours are condensed into a deep, smoky oil with notes of burnt timber, charred earth, and ancient campfires. It is the darkness beneath the leather the ember that continues glowing long after the flames have disappeared.
Labdanum Absolute begins its life beneath the Mediterranean sun, where the leaves of the rockrose shrub become coated in a rich, aromatic resin. Once collected and purified, it reveals an opulent warmth of amber, balsam, worn leather, and golden resins that have defined some of history's greatest perfumes.
From the towering forests of Southeast Asia comes Gurjan Balsam, where the mighty Dipterocarp trees release a fragrant oleoresin after careful tapping. This precious balsam possesses a remarkable depth woody, resinous, slightly smoky, and almost creamy bridging the worlds of incense and leather with extraordinary elegance.
The fragrance opens with vibrant black pepper, pink pepper, luminous saffron, and rich cardamom oleoresin before descending into this cathedral of smoke and resin. As it settles, supple leather intertwines with cedarwood, guaiac wood, earthy patchouli, moss, soft musk, and the mineral sensuality of ambergris.
Onyx Leather is not merely inspired by leather.
It is inspired by the people who climbed mountains to harvest sacred resin. By the craftsmen who spent weeks smoking hides above birch fires. By the distillers who coaxed oils from bark, wood, and resin with nothing more than fire, patience, and generations of knowledge.
This is leather as it was meant to be alive with smoke, rich with incense, and built upon the extraordinary beauty of nature's most precious extractions.

IFRA Transparency & Safety Commitment
At Kilani Essence, we believe artistic freedom and responsible formulation should exist together.
While Kilani Essence is not a member of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and our fragrances are not IFRA certified, we voluntarily formulate our fragrances with reference to the current IFRA Standards for fine fragrance applications.
When developing each Eau de Parfum, we carefully review the recommended usage levels for restricted fragrance materials and work within those limits where applicable. Materials such as Rectified Birch Tar and Rectified Cade Oil are selected specifically because they preserve their iconic smoky leather character while meeting modern perfumery safety expectations.
Our commitment is simple:
We use premium-quality fragrance materials sourced from trusted suppliers.
We reference the latest IFRA Standards during formulation.
We consider supplier safety documentation and regulatory guidance throughout development.
We balance artistic expression with responsible ingredient selection.
Perfumery is our art.
Safety is our responsibility.
Every Kilani Essence fragrance is created to honour both.
